Installation Guidelines
when you install the procurve switch 8100fl, follow these instructions toprevent personal injury:
1 never attempt to mount a chassis into a rack by yourself.
2 devices installed in a rack or cabinet must be mounted as low as possible, with the heaviest device at the bottom and progressively lighter devices installed above. the rack or cabinet must be adequately secured to prevent it from becoming unstable and/or falling over.
3 high leakage current can be caused by multiple power supplies. for this reason, ensure that each power supply is connected to a separate branch circuit with a proper earth connection before you connect it. see the illustration on for the location of the grounding screws on the back side of the switch chassis.
4 never operate the switch with exposed power supply or module slots. blank slot covers must be installed in any empty slots to ensure safe operation and proper cooling. you can leave the pc card slot in the management module exposed, but do not insert any objects other than the appropriate pc flash ram card into the pc card slot.
5 never operate the switch if the chassis becomes wet or if the area in which the chassis is installed is wet.
6 to avoid energy and mechanical hazards, never allow any part of your body, jewelry, tool, or other foreign object to enter any module or power supply slots.
7 the fiber optic connectors on the procurve switch 8100fl are type 1 lasers. avoid looking directly into connected optical connectors or optical fiber cables.
installation guidelines (continued)
when you install the procurve switch 8100fl, follow these instructions to prevent damage to switch components:
1 always use proper electrostatic discharge (esd) gear when touching or handling a management module, interface module, power supply, fan tray, or other internal parts of the switch.
2 ensure the power source circuits are properly grounded (refer to the illustration on for the location of the chassis grounding port.)
3 use the power cables supplied with the switch to connect it to the power source.
if your installation requires a different power cable than the one supplied with the switch and power supply, be sure the cable is adequately sized for the switch’s current requirements. in addition, be sure to use a power cable displaying the mark of the safety agency that defines the regulations for power cables in your country. the mark is your assurance that the power cable can be used safely with the switch and power supply.
procurve 8100fl switches have no power on-and-off switch. to power on and off the switch, connect and disconnect the power supply cable or remove all power supplies. ensure that the socket outlet is located/ installed near the equipment and is easily accessible in case the switch must be powered off. to avoid electrical shock, disconnect all power supply cables before servicing equipment.
4 ensure the switch does not overload the power circuits, wiring, and overcurrent protection. each power cable should be connected to separate branch circuits. to determine the possibility of overloading the supply circuits, add together the ampere ratings of all devices installed on the same circuit as the switch and compare the total with the rating limit for the circuit. the maximum ampere ratings are usually printed on the devices near the ac power connectors.
5 do not install the switch in an environment where the operating ambient temperature might exceed 40℃ (104℉).
6 allow three to four inches of space around the sides and back of the switch to make sure the air flow for the switch is not restricted.
7 ensure that for any switch slot into which no module is installed, the cover plate is installed to cover the slot. a cover plate is required for safe operation, and to ensure proper switch cooling. for safety, you should never have more than one module slot uncovered at a time while the switch is powered on.
