Mounting the Switch
procurve 8100fl switches are designed to be mounted in a standard 19” equipment rack.

if necessary, remove all blanks used to cover the slots for interface module, management modules, switch fabric modules, fan trays, and power supplies. follow esd procedures when handling these components.

a fully loaded 8108fl switch weighs approximately 220 lb (100 kg), and an unloaded chassis weighs approximately 94 lb (43 kg). to avoid personal injury, plan on having at least two people available to help move the unit into place onto the rack. two or more people are required when mounting this switch.

a fully loaded switch 8116fl weighs approximately 340 lb (154 kg), and an unloaded chassis weighs approximately 137 lb (62 kg). to avoid personal injury, plan on having at least three people available to help move the unit into place onto the rack. three or more people are required when mounting this switch.

follow these safety precautions before you move the switch:

1 procurve networking recommends that you use a rack shelf (not provided) to help mount a switch, as described in this section. if you do not have a rack shelf, it is recommended that you use a hand crane or other lifting device to avoid personal injury.

2 avoid lifting the total weight of the chassis manually. however, if you must lift the assembly, consider the total weight of the system and calculate at least one person for every 60lb of weight to be lifted. never lift the unit alone.

3 once installed, the chassis is not intended to be moved frequently. to avoid having to move the chassis, ensure that your site has the correct power sources and network connections .

to mount the procurve switch 8100fl chassis:

    1. lift the chassis out of the shipping container with the help of the product sling packed with the chassis.

    2. remove all module and power supply blanks from the chassis to make it as light as possible before installing it in the rack.

    3. move the chassis into position in front of the rack using a trolley (not shipped with the switch).

position the chassis so that the front of the switch is facing towards you. this will allow you to easily slide the chassis into place.

    4. (optional) install a rack shelf (not provided with your switch) into position as low as possible in the rack. make sure that any screws used to secure the shelf to the rack are securely tightened.

make sure the rack is bolted down to prevent it from becoming unstable and/or falling over when the chassis is installed.

the chassis will be installed on top of the rack shelf.

    5. the mounting brackets supplied with the switch allow it to be mounted in different locations relative to the front of the rack (see illustration below). attach the brackets on both sides of the chassis for the position you select.

be sure to tighten the mounting screws until they are snug. be careful not to overtighten them. this can result in damage to the screws or chassis.

    6. position the chassis in the product sling so that the front of the chassis lines up with the front edge of the sling (see illustration below). this allows the back of the chassis to extend over the sling so that it can be more easily positioned in the rack or on the rack shelf.

    7. with the help of a second person or hand crane, lift the chassis into position in front of the rack or set its back edge on top of a rack shelf.

    8. with the help of a third person, carefully slide the chassis into the rack (over the rack shelf, if one is installed) until the mounting brackets touch the rack and you can remove the product sling.

the chassis may lean slightly backwards in the rack.

    9. while a second person pushes the bottom of the chassis so that the mounting brackets are flush with the rack, use the appropriate screwdriver to tighten the screws in the lowest holes of the mounting brackets on the chassis to the rack.

continue tightening the screws in the holes on the right and left sides of the mounting brackets to fix it to the rack, starting with the bottommost holes and moving upwards.

all mounting screws must be tightened securely before the chassis can be loaded with additional hardware. if you accidentally leave the screws loose, the chassis can slip and fall, possibly causing damage and injury.
