the switch 8108fl is shipped with a single ac power supply; the switch 8116fl is shipped with two ac power supplies. extra slots are provided in the front of each chassis for the use of additional (optional) redundant power supplies: one in the switch 8108fl and two in the switch 8116fl.
this section explains how to install one or more ac power supplies in the chassis. it is recommended that you complete installation of the switch modules before turning the power on to verify the installation.
observe the following precautions when installing a power supply in your switch:
1 take into consideration the ratings on power supplies when connecting them to your supply circuits. overloading circuits can destroy overcurrent protection as well as supply wiring.
2 use a single-phase grounded ac power source located within 6 feet (1.89 meters) of the installation site.
3 use only certified and suitable power cables and plug assemblies for your location.
4 do not cover the power supply inlet or exhaust vent.
5 high leakage current can be caused by multiple power supplies. for this reason, it is essential that each power cable be connected to separate branch circuits with proper earth connections.
to install an ac power supply (j8732a):
1. insert a flat blade screwdriver (or similar lever device) into the indent located on the bottom edge in the center of the handle. gently turn the screwdriver with the handle downward and lower the power supply handle to its fully extended position.
2. position the power supply between the guides in an open power supply slot.

3. slide the ac power supply all the way into the slot, firmly but gently pressing to make sure that the connectors on the back of the power supply are completely seated in the backplane.
4. push the handle up and flush with the power supply chassis. the handle should snap into place, locking the power supply into position.
if the handle does not snap into a vertical position, do not force it. you may need to re-insert the power supply, taking care to adjust the handle position during the final few centimeters to successfully engage the retaining latch.
5. attach the power cable to the corresponding ac outlet from the rear, side, or bottom of the chassis as your installation requires (see the following illustration).

to provide strain relief for a power cable, tie wrap the cable to the access opening on the side of the chassis or to the rack.
6. repeat steps 1 to 5 to install an additional power supply.
