after you have installed all the appropriate components for your switch (power supplies, fan trays, and the various modules required for your installation), replace the power and slot covers over any empty power bays and module slots. then power on the switch to verify that it is working properly by following the procedure described.
for proper switch cooling and to reduce any electronic emissions, install the appropriate slot covers over any unused power bays and module slots.
failure to use the correct slot cover may result in improper switch cooling.
make sure that you use the correct type of cover for each empty slot. each cover is labeled as follows to indicate the type of slot for which it is designed (part numbers shown in parentheses):
1 fm cover for switch 8008fl fabric module slots (5069-0122)
2 fm cover for switch 8016fl fabric module slots (5069-7937)
3 mm cover for management module slots (5069-0123)
4 im cover for interface module slots (5069-0124)
5 em cover for switch 8116fl expansion module slots (5069-0125)
the following illustration shows a fully loaded switch 8108fl chassis:

to verify the installation:
1. make sure all exposed interface module slots and power supply bays are free of foreign objects, such as tools, and have the correct slot covers.
2. check the power supplies to make sure they are attached to your power source.
3. connect an active terminal or a pc running terminal emulation software to the console port on the switch chassis (labelled console for mm-a or console for mm-b) for the active management module for details). the active management module (mm-a or mm-b) has its active led lit (green).
4. verify proper operation by observing the leds. make sure the led on each power supply and fan tray assembly is a solid green. also, make sure that the status led on each active module is solid green.
1 the link and activity leds on the 1-port x2 10-gbe module (j8729a) will go on for two seconds when a transceiver is inserted into the port. they will then go off until a network cable is plugged into the transceiver and the leds follow their normal operational behavior.
2 the activity led on the 1-port 10-gbe lr module (j8733a) will flash once every four seconds. this is a safety feature known as auto laser shutdown.
3 the link status led for the ports on the 10-port 100/1000base-t module (j8734a) will show solid green when a port is connected at 1000 mbps, and solid amber when a port is connected at 100 mbps.
