the procurve switch 8100fl chassis supports three types of modules:

    1 switch fabric modules(full-height module for 8116fl; or half-height module for 8108fl)

    2 management modules

    3 interface modules

    to replace a module, you must follow a different procedure for different module types:

    1 for a fabric or interface module, you can remove the module from its slot in the procurve 8100fl switch chassis and install a new module in the empty slot while the switch is powered on.

    2 for a management module, you must first stop the module by entering the halt command. then remove the module from its slot and install a new module.

    to avoid damaging modules and the backplane, be sure you are inserting the right type of module into the slot type made for it.
