Wall-Mounting the Router
this section explains how to mount the cisco 3640 or cisco 3620 router on a wall. if you have questions or need help with the wall-mounting procedure, see appendix a, "troubleshooting."

if you are planning to wall-mount your router, do so before making network and power connections. if you need to install network modules or wan interface cards, you can do so either before or after mounting the router, whenever you have better access to the rear of the router.

when choosing a wall mounting location, consider cable limitations and wall structure.

by default, the router is shipped with 19-inch rack-mount brackets which can also be used for wall-mounting. if you had ordered the 23- or 24-inch brackets, either pair could be used to wall-mount your router.

attaching wall-mount brackets to the router

to install the cisco 3620 or cisco 3640 router on a wall, first attach the brackets on each side of the chassis as shown in figure 3-30 or figure 3-31, using plastic washers and slotted hex-head screws. position the washers so that the narrow shoulder faces the router chassis.

the hex-head screws and plastic washers are used only for wall-mounting the router. rack-mount brackets are attached using phillips-head screws, without washers.

mounting the router on the wall

after fastening the brackets to the chassis, follow this procedure to mount the chassis on the wall:

step 1 by using the brackets as a template, mark and drill holes on the board where you will fasten the router. do not attach the router to the board yet.

step 2 locate the wall studs where you plan to attach the router.

the router must be fastened securely to two studs.

step 3 drill wall-mount screw locations through the plywood board and studs.

plan to mount the router so that the front and rear of the chassis are perpendicular to the floor, with the front upward and at eye level, so you can read the leds.

step 4 mount the plywood board on the wall, using your own 3/16 x 2-1/2 inch or larger wood screws.

step 5 fasten the router to the board, using your own #6 x 1/2-inch screws. (see figure 3-32 or figure 3-33.)

after the router has been installed, you can:

. install network modules. (refer to the publication cisco network modules hardware installation guide.)

. install a wan interface card. (refer to the publication cisco wan interface cards hardware installation guide.)

. connect to a network. (refer to the publication cisco network modules hardware installation guide.)

the cables required to connect the router to a network are not provided with the router. however, cables and transceivers can be ordered from cisco. for ordering information, contact customer service. for cable pinouts, refer to the online publication cisco modular access router cable specifications available on cisco.com and on the documentation cd-rom.
