1998年正值牛津高阶英语词典（advanced learner's diccionary）的创始人霍恩比（a s hornby）百龄冥遂，也是牛津大学出版社出版词典50周年大庆。霍恩比对词典编纂的伟大贡献在于他以身为英语教师的经验编纂出一部能满足学习者需要的词典。本高阶英语词典成为历来最畅销的书籍之一正是他成功的写照。
新千年伊始，如今这个版本--第六版更有所突破，使原版中以学习者为中心的重点得到进一步加强。我们通过对学习者如何使用词典的研究到许多东西，也从众多教师和学生的建议中获益匪浅。
词典使用者希望能迅速查找到他们所需的信息，希望查到后能理解，而且能在口头或书面语中运用，本词典住处的编排一目了然，在较长的词条中使用了文 项提示（short cut），帮助使用都 准确找到他们想找的词义。所有释义均用不超过3 000的词汇解释，双第五版的用词还少500个。释义词汇（defining wocabulary）包括了释义中使用的所有项目（见附录8列表），而交互式非在所列词汇的词干 上加前缀和后缀而刻意减少。学习者只要熟悉列表中的词汇，在理解本词典的释义时就不会有任何困难。
本词典中新的用法说明（usage note）和研习专页（study page）表明了各词项之间的联系。这些项目同使用者易于理解提示注解（help note）一起，对语言的运用提供了重要的指引。词源注解（origin note）对一些丰富多彩的词语的出处提供了引人入胜的诠释。所有这些特点不便保证让经验较少的学习者获得他们所需要的一切帮助，还确保让那些最高层次的学习者不断从中发现对他们具有挑战性而饶有趣味的新事物。

there are also some words in english thar have more than one possible spelling or form,when both spellings or forms are aceeptable. information about these words is given at the most frequent spelling or form.
