Setting up the Internet Firewall
this section describes the setup of the internet firewall using the management interface viewed with a web browser. it includes information on:

1 setting up a management station

    2 changing the administrator password

    3 configuring the network information

1 setting up a management station.

you can manage the internet firewall from a web browser application using the web management interface. you can manage the internet firewall from any computer connected to the same network as the internet firewall.

any computer used for management is referred to as a management station.

make sure that you use a web browser that is:

    1 java-enabled

2 supports http uploads, for example, netscape version 4 or above, or internet explorer version 4 or above.

if the browser does not support http uploads, you cannot use certain features, such as updating the software and uploading pre-configured settings.

the internet firewall has a default ip address, 192.168.1.254 (my.3com.com), which you use to access it when you set it up initially. during this initial setup, your management station must have an ip address in the same subnet as the internet firewall. for example, set the ip address of the management station to 192.168.1.200.

for more information about changing the ip settings for the management station, see the internet firewall quick start guide.

write down the existing ip settings (ip address, subnet mask, router or default gateway) of the management station before changing it. once you have initially set up the internet firewall, change the management station back to its original ip settings.

2 launch the web browser application.

a enter http://192.168.1.254 or http://my.3com.com (the internet firewall default address) into the box at the top of the browser window.

the login dialog box is displayed.

b in the user name field, type the default user name: admin

c in the password field, type the default password: password

    d click login.

passwords are case-sensitive. enter the password exactly as defined. make sure the caps lock key is not on.

the main screen of the management interface is displayed.

    3 configure network information.

a select network settings (lan & wan).

b from the network addressing mode drop-down list, select the addressing mode that you want to use. there are four modes

1 choose nat with dhcp client if you obtain the nat public ip address, the wan router address and the wan and dmz subnet masks from a remote dhcp server on the wan. if you use a modem to connect to the internet, you may have to use this setting because some modem isps implement dhcp in their service.

    this is the default setting.

2 choose standard if your network does not use private ip addresses or if you have ip addresses for each machine that requires access to the internet.

3 choose nat enabled if you want to use a single ip address for accessing the internet, if you use private ip addresses on the network or if you do not have an ip address for each machine that requires access to the internet.

4 choose nat with pppoe client if you obtain your nat public ip addresses, wan router address and wan and dmz subnet masks from your dsl operator using pppoe. you will need to know your user name and password for the pppoe server. this information can be obtained from your isp.

see “network settings” on page 50 for more information about the network addressing mode.

    4 configure password settings.

a from the main screen (see figure 8), select set password. a window similar to the following is displayed.

figure 9 change administrator password dialog box

the security of the internet firewall depends on the secrecy of the administrator’s password; it is very important to change the password from the default.

b in the old password box, type the old password.

c in the new password and confirm new password boxes, type the new password.

d click update to send the configuration data to the internet firewall.

5 set the date and time.

a from the main screen (see figure 8), select set date & time. a window similar to the following is displayed.

figure 10 set date and time dialog box

b type the time in 24-hour format.

c click update to send the configuration data to the internet firewall.

    6 restart the internet firewall.

a click tools on the left side of the browser window.

    b select the restart tab.

    c click restart internet firewall.

d click yes to confirm the restart.

the internet firewall takes approximately 90 seconds to restart, during which time the power led flashes.

the internet firewall is now functioning and protecting the lan from internet-based attacks and break-ins. internet filtering is not yet enabled.

    7 reset the management station.

change the ip settings for the management station back to their original values. you may have to restart the management station, depending on its operating system.

8 review the status of the internet firewall.

a when the internet firewall has restarted, log in again (see step 2) using the new administrator password you set up in step 4.

b from the home screen, select unit status. a window similar to figure 11 is displayed.

    figure 11 unit status window

the status window displays the current status of the internet firewall.

any problems are listed in red text. for example, if the internet access device was not contacted, or the default password was not changed, this is listed. items listed in red require immediate, corrective action.

general operation status messages, such as enabled hacker attack protection, web site filter status, and log settings are listed in black text.

the unit status window also shows if the internet firewall is registered.

9 to register the internet firewall:

a in the web browser, enter:

    http://www.3com.com/internetfirewall/

b complete the registration form, and make a note of the registration code.

c on the main screen, select unit status. a message is displayed stating that the internet firewall is not registered.

d type the registration code you were given into the text box next to the message, and click update. the internet firewall is now registered.

you have now finished the initial setup for the internet firewall.

see chapter 4 for further information about setting up the internet firewall.

see chapter 5 for information about setting up the web site filter.

see appendix e for examples showing how to set up the internet firewall in various configurations.
