Control of FCD-2 Operation
the fcd-2 operating mode is determined by a set of parameters stored in an internal non-volatile memory. to select these parameters, you can use the fcd-2 front panel push buttons or control terminal.
after the operating parameters have been loaded (this process is called configuration setup), fcd-2 no longer requires operator attendance.
the configuration selected by the user and stored in the fcd-2 memory is not affected by when power is turned off. upon turn-on, fcd-2 checks the validity of the stored configuration data and after the self-test takes the last selected configuration. if the configuration does not require modification, fcd-2 is ready for operation immediately after the power is applied. however, if the configuration is not valid, fcd-2 loads the default configuration. the default configuration, prepared by the manufacturer, is stored in the program eprom.
all operations are performed using an interactive, menu-driven interface, controlled by the lcd and three push buttons. fcd-2 guides you in the execution of the required task by means of messages and checks your inputs. moreover, fcd-2 presents you only those parameter values, which are available on your fcd-2 model in the selected operating mode.
if you make a configuration error (for example, you select a parameter value that conflicts with the current operating mode), fcd-2 rejects the erroneous selection and displays an error message that identifies an error.
for detailed operating instructions, see section 3.5 and section 3.6.
organization of the lcd
the fcd-2 display has two rows:
1 the upper row shows the header, which can be one of the following:
(1)alarm buffer
(2)diagnostics
(3)test options
(4)name of one of the four configuration parameter groups (see section 3-4).
2 the lower row displays the following information:
(1)parameter name and value
(2)status messages
(3)test or ioopback name and status
(4)error messages
(5)diagnostics messages
information displayed on the lcd
the lcd displays four types of information messages:
1 status messages (alarms)
2 diagnostic and performance monitoring data
3 test status
4 configuration parameters.
status messages
when fcd-2 is not being configured, its display shows status and alarm messages. these messages appear under the header alarm buffer.
for list of alarms and instructions how to work with them, refer to chapter 5.
diagnostic and performance monitoring data
the diagnostic data displayed by fcd-2 includes statistics of out-of-service (oos) events and bpv (bipolar violation) counter.
when the crc-4 option is enabled, fcd-2 can also display an error count.
the diagnostics data appear under header diagnostics. for explanation of the diagnostic data parameters and their monitoring, refer to section 5-3, in chapter 5.
test functions
the fcd-2 test functions include:
1 local and remote ioopbacks on the e1 main link, data channel
2 built-in bert on the data channel for use with local and remote loopbacks
3 maintenance loopbacks, which can be activated only when the dbg jumper is set to on.
the test function messages appear under the header test options. for
description of test functions, refer to section 5.4 in chapter 5.
configuration parameters
the fcd-2 configuration parameters are divided into the following four groups:
1 system parameters (system parameter)
2 link parameters (link parameter)
3 data channel parameters (ch. parameter)
4 supervisory port parameters (sp parameter).
section 3.4 describes each group of parameters and provides practical configuration guidelines, when necessary.
in addition to the parameters configured from the front panel, there are parameters that can be controlled only from the control terminal. these options are described in chapter 4.
using front-panel push buttons
fcd-2 operation is controlled by means of the lcd and the three push buttons designated cursor, scroll and enter. the same control actions are consistent]y used for all the activities:
cursor
use this push button to indicate what you want to change. pressing the cursor push button moves the cursor (a bar that indicates the selected field) among the fields in the selected display.
scroll
some fields list several different items. you can change ("scroll") the item indicated by the cursor by pressing scroll.
press this push button repeatedly to display the alternatives for the current field indicated by the cursor. holding this button pressed causes automatic scrolling of the available alternatives.
enter
press this button once to select the value displayed in the field indicated by the cursor.
1 if the selected value is valid, it replaces the old value and the change takes effect immediately.
2 if your selection is incorrect, it is not accepted. in this case, fcd-2 displays a config error message with a two-digit code in the second display row. the code indicates what is wrong. after a short time, the error message disappears and fcd-2 returns to the original display. now you can correct the error. refer to chapter 5 for the list of the error codes and description of what to do to correct the problem.
when the alarm buffer is displayed, the enter push button can be used to erase the currently displayed alarm message, and to reset the oos, bpv or crc error counters.
